The Frosting Company

Wellness

Every year, some 15,700 children are diagnoised with cancer in the United States. -- I was one of them.

Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, also know as ALL, is the most common cancer found in children, accounting for about 75% of pediatric diagnoses. Leukemia is a blood cancer and most often occurs in the white blood cells, but some leukemias start in other blood cell types.

Initially, the symptoms of leukemia present like the flu, people just feel tired and weak, often with a fever and loss of appetite. Due to a malignant disease of the bone marrow, abnormal and immature white blood cells enter the bloodstream. Chemotherapy is the main form of treatment for leukemia and strong medications often cause rashes and other skin issues . The exact cause of leukemia in adolescents is still unkown. Researchers have suggested that some childhood leukemias may be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Most people assume cosmetics and personal care products are tested for safety before being stocked on store shelves. In truth, personal care products are one of the least regulated industries in the U.S.

My inspiration for The Frosting Company and my commitment to raise awareness for pediatric cancer was shaped by these discoveries. Thus my sister and I created a line of artisan products that are free of gluten, soy, parbens, sulfates, phthalates and artificial preservatives. We also work with celebrities to bring them into pediatric oncology units as part of our Giving Back program.

Beauty products are largely unregulated. Unlike drugs and medical devices, cosmetics are not subject to pre-market approval or notification. In fact, there are only about 10 types of ingredients that CAN NOT be used, which means only about 1% of the 84,000 chemicals on the market have been studied for safety.

Being that personal care product ingredients are evaluated through a VOLUNTARY industry program, it’s hard for consumers to know whether or not there are toxins in their skin products. That’s why I wanted to launch my own line of beauty products, proudly made in the USA.

Education is an important part of our message.  Your skin is the largest organ, so a significant percent of what they put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream. That’s why our tagline is “enriching your skin with nature’s sweetness.”

Today, The Frosting Company boasts products that range from creams and lip balms to bath fizzles and body pops.

In June of 2008, when I was just 10 years old, I was diagnosed with leukemia . Over the next two and a half years I would undergo some harsh and debilitating chemotherapy which took its toll on my body. In particular, my skin became ultra-sensitive and I started realizing how many toxins and harsh chemicals were in most of the skin products available on the market. I wanted to change that paradigm with The Frosting Company, a line of artisan products that are natural and made with the finest organic ingredients. Today, I am proud to be known as a cancer survivor, philanthropist, entrepreneur, Huffington Post blogger and public speaker. I have spoken at events for Johnson & Johnson, Angel 34, SoaringWord, ZUMBA, THON and more.

A cancer diagnosis is far-reaching. Not only does it impact the patient, but it extends to the family and greater community too. We were in the hospital all the time, and it was our work to brighten up Gabrielle's spirits and keep everything positive. Children battling life threatening illness spend a lot of time in the hospital. In 2011 Gabrielle and I started working to bring celebrities into pediatric oncology units across Pennsylvania and NJ. Today, I am proud to be known as a college graduate, an entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Advice for our peers

April 13, 2016

TIP #1: DO NOT LET YOUR AGE DEFINE YOU! You are never too young or old to start following your dreams! Today is the perfect day to start working towards your goals! Check out this piece I wrote for the Huffington Post on this very topic!

TIP #2: DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP Both my mom and my aunt were instrumental in helping me and Brittney understand the FDA guidelines and how to bring The Frosting Company to market. Brittney and I have been so blessed to have both of them and other great mentors too.

TIP #3: BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE A ROLE-MODEL TOO! Brittney and I have been blessed to have entrepreneurs in our family that date back over five generations. This pathway has been ingrained in our family structure and definitely has been an influence on us.

TIP #4: START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW! When we started to create our own products, we used ingredients that we felt safe using.

TIP #5: GIVE PEOPLE A REASON TO CELEBRATE WITH YOU! In November 2015 I celebrated five years of being cancer free. Our Frosting Belle program gives passionate people who want to live chemical-free the opportunity to share this amazing journey with us!

TIP #6: USE THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA!  A large percentage of our time is dedicated to social media. We use many tools to stay in touch with the customer-base. Our goal is to educate people about the importance of using natural bath and beauty products as well as to inspire individulas to turn a negative experience into a positive.

TIP #7: KEEP YOUR CONTENT FRESH! We use YouTube to promote our new seasonal products.

TIP #8: GIVE SOMETHING BACK! Success happens because you care about something more than just making money. For us, giving back comes in the form of working with celebrites to brighten the days of children in the hospital.

TIP #9: TREAT EVERYDAY YOU HAVE AS A GIFT! Smiles and hugs are magical. The more you give them out, the more you receive!

TIP #10: FIND YOUR "ME" TIME Whether you run, practtice yoga or soak in the tub, getting alone-time is a great way to re-fresh and re-start if you've had a challenging day.
