The gift of a smile is more impactful than most people realize. Thoughts -- both positive and negative -- have neurochemical charges which can impact people momentarily or for a lifetime! And according to psychologists, the act of smiling benefits your health and happiness.
It's been noted, for example, that people who consciously practice gratitude are happier because they experience a surge of rewarding neurotransmitters, like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. It's also been said that if you're always thinking negative thoughts, you are bombarding your cells with "negative peptides" which will ultimately lesson the number of positive peptides in your cells.
Found throughout the body, including the brain and immune system, a peptide is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Neuropeptides are the means by which all cells in the body communicate with one another. There are more than 100 distinct neuropeptides in the nervous system which can influence a range of body operations from gene expression to the building of new synapses.
There's good news though! Every cell in your body is replaced every month or so, meaning there's an opportunity to reprogram your "negative peptides" with positive ones. Scientists even believe that a person's genetic make-up is determined by thoughts, feelings, attitudes and perceptions.
